The impact of coronavirus on children and young people
This generation of learners continues to be significantly affected by experiencing a global pandemic during their compulsory education. They share the worries of their families and friends; they absorb grief via the media or experience it directly; and they may spend the day with stressed or bereaved teachers in the classroom.
Good levels of personal wellbeing, and feeling secure, are important for education, as they put pupils in the right frame of mind to learn. Sadly the pandemic leaves many children and young people feeling anxious, and unsafe. It is estimated that one in six school-aged children in the UK now has a diagnosable mental disorder, an increase from one in nine in 2017. Inevitably this has a negative effect on their ability to learn, meaning potentially life-changing consequences for an entire generation.
